Aubameyang seals Chelsea victory after Tomori red enrages Milan

Graham Potter’s understated revolution at Chelsea is starting to make some serious noise. There is no hint of Thomas Tuchel’s replacement struggling to cope with the big Champions League nights and, while it is not Potter’s style to blow his own trumpet, he could be forgiven for reflecting on how far he has come as he watched his new team cruise to victory at the San Siro. These are moments to cherish for a man who once coached students at Hull University. Potter is operating at a far higher level now and his shrewd coaching has steered Chelsea’s Champions League campaign back on course. ‘Overlapping shocks’ are undoing efforts to end hunger in Africa, UN warns

Decades of work to reduce hunger in Africa are being reversed as the continent struggles to cope with conflict, climate crisis and the global economic downturn, the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has warned. About 278 million people in Africa – approximately one-fifth of the total population – went hungry in 2021, an increase of 50 million people since 2019, according to UN figures. Based on current trends, this is projected to rise to 310 million by 2030. “Africa is moving backwards in its efforts to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition,” Abebe Haile-Gabriel, an FAO assistant director general and its regional representative for Africa, told a conference in Addis Ababa on Monday. Paris becomes latest city to boycott broadcasting of 2022 tournament

Paris will not broadcast World Cup matches on giant screens in public fan zones amid concerns over rights violations of migrant workers and the environmental impact of the tournament in Qatar. It follows similar moves by other French cities, despite France going in as the defending champion.  Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor of Paris in charge of sports, told reporters in the French capital that the decision against public broadcasting of matches is due to "the conditions of the organisation of this World Cup, both on the environmental and social level." He said in an interview with France Blue Paris that "air-conditioned stadiums" and the "conditions in which these facilities have been built are to be questioned." Rabadan stressed that Paris is not boycotting the football tournament but explained that Qatar's "model of staging big events goes against what [Paris, the host of the 2024 Olympics] wants to organise." Protests galvanize Iranians abroad in hope, worry and unity

LONDON (AP) — As anti-government protests roil cities and towns in Iran for a fourth week, tens of thousands of Iranians living abroad have marched on the streets of Europe, North America and beyond in support of what many believe to be a watershed moment for their home country. From those who fled in the 1980s after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution to a younger generation of Iranians born and raised in Western capitals, many in the diaspora community say they feel an unprecedented unity of purpose and affinity with the demonstrations at home sparked by the death of a 22-year-old woman detained by Iran’s morality police. “I see this as a turning point for Iran in many ways -- we’ve always had political fault lines that divided us, but this time it’s people saying, ‘I’m with women’,” said Tahirih Danesh, 52, a human rights researcher who lives and works in London. “It’s phenomenal, it’s happened at such speed, and this sense of camaraderie among Iranians has been amazing.” In the past mon...

EXPLAINER-What makes a nuclear weapon 'tactical'?

North Korea said this week that its recent flurry of missile tests were designed to simulate showering the South with tactical nuclear weapons. Experts believe that if North Korea resumes nuclear testing, it could include development of smaller warheads meant for battlefield use. From the war in Ukraine to North Korea's recent missile testing spree, tactical nuclear weapons are being debated and developed in a way not seen since the Cold War. There is no universal definition of such weapons, and analysts note that the use of any type of nuclear device would break the "nuclear taboo" in place since the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan in 1945, the only time they have been deployed in war. Here are the characteristics of tactical nuclear weapons and why they have drawn so much attention. WHAT IS A TACTICAL NUCLEAR WEAPON? Tactical nuclear weapons are often characterized by their size, their range, or their use for limited military targets. They are often referred...
